Devastating truck accident in upstate New York kills 7 victims

May 30th, 2013 • truck accidents

An absolutely devastating truck accident that occurred last night in upstate New York has likely rocked multiple families. It is unclear exactly what transpired, but it appears that the impact occurred when the trailer attached to the truck somehow dislodged, careened across multiple lanes of traffic and ultimately struck the unsuspecting passengers of a minivan. The violent impact tore the minivan into two chunks, and the wreckage came to rest on the shoulder of Route 13 just outside Syracuse.

The minivan was transporting eight passengers, several of which were young children. Only one of the passengers survived the violent impact, he was transported to a local hospital for medical treatment and his condition remains unknown at this time. Both passengers of the truck are reportedly uninjured.

As the families of the victims are likely grappling to understand this huge tragedy today, a lengthy investigation is still continuing to gain a more comprehensive understand of the circumstances that led to this devastating truck accident.

Investigators will likely look for any infractions of federal trucking regulations that could have caused the trailer to come loose. There are several strict federal regulations that surround trucking, which include: weight restrictions, driving limits and maintenance checks. Infractions can mean significant financial liability if the infractions contribute to an accident.

The outcome of the investigation will provide crucial information for the surviving families of these victims relevant to the possibility of financial recovery. It is unclear exactly what relation all of the victims had to each other as the names have not been released pending autopsies scheduled for today and tomorrow, followed by notifying next of kin.
