Icy road conditions cause pileups all over the country

December 12th, 2013 • car accidents

As the winter weather begins to worsen and roads become icy and slick, reports of massive pileups in multiple states are beginning to surface. In New York, a pileup that occurred at 11 p.m. on the Bronx Parkway on Dec. 8 left 35 injured and an uncounted number stranded. The Westchester County Police Department stated that most of the vehicles involved were driving slowly due to the weather conditions and that many of the accidents were collisions at slow speeds. Many of those suffered injuries after being bounced around in their vehicles.

A second pileup that involved 50 vehicles occurred in Philadelphia. One motorist was killed at approximately 12:30 p.m. after leaving his vehicle and being struck by a car. The collisions left motorists and other occupants stranded for approximately seven hours. An accident that occurred on Interstate 81 in Maryland when a tractor-trailer spun out and collided with a second tractor-trailer ultimately involved more than 20 vehicles.

Interstate 10 in West Texas also saw a massive pileup. In this incident, one motorist stated that his vehicle had been stranded for approximately 26 hours, and at least one person died. Also, approximately 300 motorists were left stranded at the Utah-Arizona border as a result of 10 inches of snow.

When the weather causes dangerous driving situations, motorists have the responsibility to drive as safely as possible. Some drivers, however, fail to slow down or adjust their driving habits. These drivers put other motorists and their passengers at serious risk for becoming injured in auto accidents. Someone who suffers injuries in an accident may be eligible to file a personal injury lawsuit, in which they may receive compensation for medical bills and other costs associated with the accident.
